MRI is not risk free
“Inappropriate use of MRI leads to increasing interventions and surgeries for low back pain (LBP).”

Those receiving it w/ a standard report describing often False + findings as the single cause of symptoms
“had a more negative perception of their spinal condition, increased catastrophization, decreased pain improvement, and poorer functional status”

“Inappropriate use of MRI leads to increasing interventions and surgeries for low back pain (LBP).”

“Routine MRI reports produce a negative perception and poor functional outcomes in LBP.” In contrast “Focussed clinical reporting had significant benefits, which calls for the need for ‘clinical reporting’ rather than ‘Image reporting’.”

Clinical reporting places the scan in context w/ other factors that drive pain & can be impacted w/out surgery, it’s common positive results in people who are asymptomatic, & the generally positive outcomes for non-surgical intervention.
